Dr. González Tuñón was appointed Citizen of the year in Oviedo in 2013, a renowned award that is granted by the magazine Vivir Oviedo each year.
The jury took into account his "hardworking character and solidary attitude, as well as his academic and professional merits". Besides this, he was recognised for the fact that he was a pioneer in the region with regards to the latest medical advances, to a great extent due to his international training, placing Asturias on the national dentistry map.
He has built the clinic that bears his name, through sheer effort and investment, into one of the most prestigious clinics in Spain, with more than 50 professionals who work because of, and for, their patients. As the president of the Professional Association of Odontologists and Stomatologists of Asturias, he has also managed to establish an agreement between the NGA Cáritas Asturias and CODES, to create a free dental service for people in hardship, lacking economic resources and with oral problems that require medical care.
The award ceremony took place at the Reconquista Hotel in Oviedo, and numerous public figures attended, such as the Mayor of Oviedo, Agustín Iglesias Caunedo; the former Chancellor of the University of Oviedo, Juan López Arranz, considered to be the "father of maxillofacial surgery in Asturias" and the president of the Professional Association of Doctors, Dr. Braña Vigil; among others.
Numerous work colleagues, friends and family also attended the event.
The 'Oviedo Citizen of the Year' Award, which began in 1995, is awarded on an annual basis to the individual or institution that has stood out in defending, communicating or working to promote the city of Oviedo.
